The truth,

Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. (John 18:37-38 [ESV])

Is the word of God,

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 [ESV])

Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. (Proverbs 30:5 [NASB])

The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. (Psalm 12:6 [ESV])

Your word is very pure, Therefore Your servant loves it. (Psalm 119:140 [NASB])

Which are words that are spoken by anyone who is sent by God,

For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. (John 12:49 [NIV])

But you, dress yourself for work; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. (Jeremiah 1:17 [ESV])

The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’… And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house. (Ezekiel 2:4-7 [ESV])

Which a person must first hear or read, before coming to the belief of those words,

So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
(Romans 10:17 [ASV])

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, (Ephesians 1:13 [ESV])

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. (1 Thessalonians 2:13 [ESV])

And after believing, even if a person has not yet understood,

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5 [ESV])

A person may then reach “understanding” of the words that are received and believed,

Through belief* we understand that the aeons* were framed by the word of God, that which is seen being made of that which was not seen. (Hebrews 11:3 [MODIFIED-JB2000])*

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:17 [ESV])

Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, (Proverbs 4:1 [NASB])

Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. (Psalm 119:34 [NIV])

I am Your servant; give me understanding, That I may know Your testimonies. (Psalm 119:125 [NASB])

Make your ear attentive to wisdom, Incline your heart to understanding; For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD And discover the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:2-5 [NASB])

The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. (Psalm 14:2 [ESV])

They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. (Nehemiah 8:8 [ESV])

And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. (Nehemiah 8:12 [ESV])

Which is why the righteous live by “belief”, also called “faith”, or “trust”,

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4 [ESV])

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:17 [ESV])

Because it is by belief and understanding of these words that the righteous walk by, hence why the word is also called a light revealing the way,

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105 [NIV])

For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, (Proverbs 6:23 [ESV])

The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. (Psalm 119:130 [ESV])

Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. (Psalm 86:11 [ESV])

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:5 [ESV])

Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul. (Psalm 143:8 [NASB])

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. (Psalm 32:8 [ESV])

He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. (Acts 18:25-26 [ESV])

For just as children readily believe what they hear, the righteous must enter the kingdom of God by mere belief of the words that are received, even if the words are not yet understood,

Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15 [NIV])

and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3 [ESV])

Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” (Luke 18:17 [ESV])

A song of ascents. Of David. My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. (Psalm 131:1-2 [NIV])

Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. (James 1:18 [ESV])

And because of this is why it is necessary for one who is wise according to the words of this world, such as scientists, evolutionists, philosophers, psychologists, and even many theologians, to become as a fool, that he may then become wise according to the actual words of God,

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. (1 Corinthians 1:26 [ESV])

Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this aeon*, let him become a fool that he may become wise. (1 Corinthians 3:18 [MODIFIED-ESV])*

In which case, the word of God is the gospel,

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14 [NIV])

because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,
 (Colossians 1:5-6 [ESV])

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24 [ESV])

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures to the aeon*.” And this is the word that was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:23-25 [MODIFIED-ABP])*

Which are the words spoken by Jesus Christ, contained in four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, which the Law itself foretold would be spoken by the “prophet” who we came to know as Jesus Christ,

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. (Deuteronomy 18:18-19 [ESV])

Which even the Levites were expecting when they asked John if he was this “prophet”,

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” (John 1:19-22 [ESV])

The word of God is also the Law itself, containing the commands of God, also called the Torah or Pentateuch,

if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— (Romans 2:18-20 [NIV])

Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. (Psalm 119:104 [ESV])

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
(Psalm 19:7 [NLT])

The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. (Proverbs 10:8 [ESV])

the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring always*; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. (Psalm 19:8-9 [MODIFIED-ESV])*

And the word of God are the words spoken by men who were directed by the holy spirit, who are prophets and apostles, whose words are contained in the epistles and the Book of Revelation, which are new testament holy writings; and the Nevi’im and Ketuvim, which are in the Tanakh, which are old testament holy writings,

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:21 [ESV])

And this compilation of the words of God is the “wisdom of God”,

See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ (Deuteronomy 4:5-6 [ESV])

Which is the wisdom that is necessary to be acquired,

The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7 [NASB])

Buy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding. (Proverbs 23:23 [NASB])

To not only begin believing and understanding, but to also increase belief and understanding,

And the apostles said to the Lord, Add to us belief! (Luke 17:5 [ABP])

For I say by the favor  being given to me, to every one  being among you, to not be high-minded above what you must think; but to think to  be of a sound mind; to each as God portioned a measure of belief.  (Romans 12:3 [ABP])

Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, (Proverbs 1:5 [ESV])

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. (Proverbs 9:9 [ESV])

Wise men store up knowledge, But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand. (Proverbs 10:14 [NASB])

And this is why wisdom is like a tree of life, and more precious than wealth,

Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed. (Proverbs 3:13-18 [NIV])

Because acquiring this wisdom, which is found in the holy scriptures, leads to deliverance unto aeonial life,

[15] And that from a babe you knew the consecrated writings, the ones being able to make you wise unto deliverance, through belief, of the one in Christ Jesus. [16] Every scripture is God inspired, and beneficial for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction– the one in righteousness; [17] that the man of God should be complete for accomplishing every good work. (II Timothy 3:15-17 [ABP])

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21 [ESV])

Hence why the word of God leads to sanctification and becoming clean,

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. (John 15:3 [ESV])

to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, (Ephesians 5:26 [BSB])

For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth. (John 17:19 [BSB])

Which comes through belief of the one whom the words in the scriptures point to, Jesus Christ,

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have aeonial* life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (John 5:39-40 [MODIFIED-ESV])*

And upon first hearing, the word of God acts as a seed,

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. (Luke 8:11 [ESV])

That then, depending on the heart of the person, may or may not grow into maturity, that bears fruit,

The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. (Luke 8:12-15 [ESV])

Where this growth into maturity reaches into the “knowledge of truth”, “knowledge of God”, and “knowledge of good and evil”,

always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:7 [NASB])

with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, (2 Timothy 2:25 [NASB])

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, (Colossians 1:9 [ESV])

who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:4 [ESV])

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ in service of the faith of God’s elect and of their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness, (Titus 1:1 [BSB])

For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. (Romans 10:2 [ESV])

that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and to all the riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of Godwhich is Christ, (Colossians 2:2 [BLB])

and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. (Colossians 3:10 [ESV])

For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, (Hebrews 10:26 [ESV])

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, (Philippians 1:9 [ESV])

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (2 Peter 1:3 [ESV])

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. (2 Peter 2:20 [ESV])

Which then leads to obedience to words of God,

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, (1 Peter 1:22 [ESV])

And doing the will of God that is revealed by those words,

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21 [ESV])

Which is the full measure of the stature of Jesus Christ once the seed grows into full maturity,

until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, (Ephesians 4:13 [ESV])

Which is why before attaining this full maturity, certain believers are not yet ready for “solid food”, which is advanced teaching for the mature,

Concerning this there is much speech from us, and difficult in interpretation to speak, since you have become sluggish in the hearings. For even by the time you ought to be teachers, you have need of one to teach you again what is the beginning of the principles of the oracles of God; and you have become those having need of milk, and not of solid food. For everyone partaking of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, the ones by constant use having trained the senses for distinguishing both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:11-14 [BLB])

and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. (1 Corinthians 2:4-6 [ESV])

Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and aeonial* judgment. (Hebrews 6:1-2 [MODIFIED-ESV])*

Interlinear Links: *αἰωνίου (aeonial), Hebrews 6:2

Because they are still infants in understanding the word of God,

like newborn babies, crave pure reasonable milk, so that by it you may grow up in respect to salvation, (1 Peter 2:2 [BLB])

Who as infants can be still tossed to and fro by every wind of teaching,

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head. (Ephesians 4:14-15 [BSB])

Because just as Eve was deceived by a lie,

You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. (Genesis 3:4 [NIV])

That led her to transgress,

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:6 [NIV])

and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. (1 Timothy 2:14 [ESV])

Against the command to not eat of the forbidden fruit,

but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:17 [ESV])

So do lies and false teaching lead those who have little to no understanding to disobey against any of the commands of God,

[16] as also in all the letters, speaking in them concerning these things; in which some things are hard to comprehend, which the illiterate and unstable make crooked, as also the rest of scriptures, to their own destruction. [17] You then, beloved, foreknowing, guard that not by the delusion of the unlawful ones having been led away, you should fall from your own steadfastness! [18] But grow in the favor and knowledge of our Lord and deliverer Jesus Christ! To him be the glory both now and into the day of the aeon*. Amen.
(2 Peter 3:16-18 [MODIFIED-ABP])*

I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot Or your brides when they commit adultery, For the men themselves go apart with harlots And offer sacrifices with temple prostitutes; So the people without understanding are ruined. (Hosea 4:14 [NASB])

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. (Revelation 2:14 [NIV])

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleadsmy servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. (Revelation 2:20 [NIV])

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
(2 Timothy 4:3-4 [ESV])

not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. (Titus 1:14 [ESV])

Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them the way of the truth will be defamed. In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you with tales they have concocted. The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep. (2 Peter 2:2-3 [BSB])

The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding. (Proverbs 10:21 [NASB])

They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. (Ephesians 4:18 [NIV])

Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. (Jeremiah 5:4 [KJV])

They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand. (Isaiah 44:18 [NIV])

The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” (Isaiah 1:3 [NIV])

When its boughs are dry, they are broken; women come and make a fire of them. For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor. (Isaiah 27:11 [ESV])

They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them. (Deuteronomy 32:28 [NIV])

Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hastens with his feet sins. (Proverbs 19:2 [KJ2000])

Ultimately leading to destruction, both to the ones deceived by lies, and even to those who lack knowledge,

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (Hosea 4:6 [ESV])

Therefore my people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their honored men go hungry, and their multitude is parched with thirst. (Isaiah 5:13 [ESV])

How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:22 [NIV])

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. (Proverbs 1:27-29 [NIV])

And this is why a wise man will seek out knowledge,

The mind of a discerning person gains knowledge, while the ears of wise people seek out knowledge. (Proverbs 18:15 [ISV])

A discerning mind seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on stupidity. (Proverbs 15:14 [ISV])
