The Law of Moses,

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” (Luke 24:44 [ESV])

Which is the first five books of the Bible, otherwise called the Torah,

There is one Torah for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you. (Exodus 12:49 [TS2009])

Or “the law”,

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (Matthew 22:36 [ESV])

Or the “law of God”,

For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, (Romans 7:22 [ESV])

Or the “law of the Lord”,

(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) (Luke 2:23 [ESV])

Or the “book of the covenant”,

And the king went up to the house of the LORD, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites, all the people both great and small. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD. (2 Chronicles 34:30 [ESV])

Or the “book of the law”,

And the LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. (Deuteronomy 29:21 [ESV])

Or the “book of the law of the LORD”,

While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD given through Moses. (2 Chronicles 34:14 [ESV])

Or the “book of Moses”,

And they set aside the burnt offerings that they might distribute them according to the groupings of the fathers’ houses of the lay people, to offer to the LORD, as it is written in the Book of Moses. And so they did with the bulls. (2 Chronicles 35:12 [ESV])

Has not been abolished,

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17 [NIV])

And because Paul was well educated in the Law of God,

And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying: “Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you.” And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. And he said: “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day. (Acts 21:40, 22:1-3 [ESV])

He identifies who will not inherit the kingdom of God,

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [NASB])

Where he is referring to these specific commands of the law,

…if she begins to fornicate…she shall be burnt with fire. (Leviticus 21:9 [JB2000])

You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol…
(Exodus 20:3-4 [NASB])

You shall not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14 [ESV])

A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak…
(Deuteronomy 22:5 [ESV])

If a man lies with a male as with a woman…they shall surely be put to death… (Leviticus 20:13 [ESV])

You shall not steal. (Exodus 20:15 [ESV])

You shall not covet…anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:17 [NASB])

You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people… (Leviticus 19:16 [NASB])

“‘Do not defraud or rob your neighbor… (Leviticus 19:13 [NIV])

Where even drunkenness is revealed to be sin in the law, in which case Lot, whose mind became darkened because of the excess of wine he drank, then had sexual relations with his daughters as a result of his drunkenness,

So that night they made their father drunk with wine, and the older daughter came and had sexual relations with her father. But he was not aware that she had sexual relations with him and then got up. (Genesis 19:33 [NETBIBLE])

Which relates to breaking this command,

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD. The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
(Leviticus 18:6-7 [KJV])

And even when Paul commands wives to wear head coverings,

but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. (1 Corinthians 11:5 [ESV])

Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? (1 Corinthians 11:13 [ESV])

He was referencing this passage in the law,

Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?” “He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. (Genesis 24:64-65 [NIV])

In which case, a head covering is a sign that a wife has come under the authority of her husband,  for the law mentions that God subjected wives to their husbands because of the curse against Adam’s wife as a result of her transgression,

To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (Genesis 3:16 [NIV])

That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head… (1 Corinthians 11:10 [ESV])

Which is also why Paul also tells wives to submit to their husbands, in reference to the law,

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. (Colossians 3:18 [ESV])

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:22 [ESV])

Which is also why wives must remain in silence in the assemblies, because it relates to submission,

let your wives* keep silent in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to chatter in the assembly.
(1 Corinthians 14:34 [WEB])*

And in another passage Paul also referenced the law concerning speaking evil against authorities,

Paul replied, “Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.‘” (Acts 23:5 [NIV])

Which was this command of the Law of Moses,

Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people. (Exodus 22:28 [NIV])

And Jesus Christ also referenced the law concerning each sin Satan tested him with,

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4 [ESV])

And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. (Deuteronomy 8:3 [ESV])

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Matthew 4:7 [ESV])

You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. (Deuteronomy 6:16 [ESV])

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'” (Matthew 4:10 [NIV])

You shall fear the LORD your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him… (Deuteronomy 10:20 [ESV])

And even the assemblies in Jerusalem taught obedience to the Law of Moses, among other believers who obeyed it,

When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers and sisters received us warmly. The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. Paul greeted them and reported in detail what God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law… The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them. (Acts 21:17-26 [NIV])

A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him. “Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’ (Acts 22:12-16 [NIV])

Where the only reason the assemblies in Jerusalem gave short instructions to the Gentiles, which are clearly missing other sins like theft or murder,

As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.” (Acts 21:25 [NIV])

Was because they didn’t want to trouble the Gentiles by sending them the entire Law, because it was already read to them in synagogues, but rather, they wanted to only mention sins that were commonly committed by them, hence,

It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not cause trouble for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals, and from blood.
For Moses has been proclaimed in every city from ancient times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath
.” (Acts 15:19-21 [BSB])

And so, this is why whoever discards the least of these commands of the law, will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens,

Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19 [NIV])

Because this very law, expressed in charges, statutes, judgments, and commandments,

Therefore you shall love the LORD your God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, always. (Deuteronomy 11:1 [KJV2000])

Which has existed even before that Law was given to Moses, even from the times of Abraham,

Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
(Genesis 26:5 [KJV])

Which has not been abolished, and reveals everything that is sin,

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” (Romans 7:7 [ESV])

…since through the law comes knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20 [ESV])

if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— (Romans 2:18-20 [NIV])

And is said to be perfect,

The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (Psalm 19:7 [NIV])

And came from heaven and is called good,

You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good. (Nehemiah 9:13 [NIV])

Now we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, knowing this, that law is not enacted for a righteous one, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for slayers of man, for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and if anything other is opposed to being sound in the teaching,
according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. (1 Timothy 1:8-11 [BLB])

And are the ways of God that were revealed to Moses,

The LORD performs righteous deeds And judgments for all who are oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the sons of Israel. (Psalm 103:6-7 [NASB])

Will be the law that all will be judged by,

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. (Romans 3:19 [NIV])

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 [NIV])

Since all the dead who are resurrected at the great white throne judgment, will all be judged by their works in accordance to this law,

And the sea gave up the dead who were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them; and each of them were judged according to their works. (Revelation 20:13 [BLB])

Because this is the law that defines what “righteousness” is,

And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.” (Deuteronomy 6:25 [NIV])

Hence why the world will be judged in righteousness, in accordance to the righteousness defined by this law,

because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31 [ESV])

and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness. (Psalm 9:8 [ESV])

Which is why not one letter, nor one stroke of a pen, will disappear from the law until heaven and earth disappear,

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:18 [NIV])

It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law. (Luke 16:17 [NIV])

Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them aeonially*. (Psalm 119:152 [NIV])*

Interlinear Links: *lə·‘ō·lām (aeonially), Psalm 119:152

Because this is the law of this heaven and earth, before the new heaven and earth comes into existence, in which case not only will this heaven and earth cease to exist,

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. (Revelation 20:11 [NIV])

But also the old covenant and the law that came forth from that covenant,

By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear. (Hebrews 8:13 [NIV])

Yet the old covenant, whose sign was the circumcision of the flesh,

Here is my covenant that you are to observe, between me and you and your descendants: Every male among you is to be circumcised. (Genesis 17:10 [ISV])

And came with the blood of animals,

Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, (Hebrews 9:18-19 [ESV])

Foreshadowed a new and greater covenant, whose sign is the circumcision of the heart,

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. (Jeremiah 31:31 [NIV])

Circumcise yourselves to the LORD; remove the foreskin of your hearts, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds.” (Jeremiah 4:4 [ESV])

Which is a circumcision made without hands by being born again into the baptism of the holy spirit,

No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. (Romans 2:29 [NIV])

And came with the blood of Jesus Christ,

for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:28 [ESV])

Which is why it is not by works of the law that anyone is saved,

know that a person is not justified by the works of the law…(Galatians 2:16 [NIV])

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law… (Romans 3:20 [NIV])

Because all have sinned,

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23 [NIV])

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8 [KJV])

And have thus become cursed by the law,

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” (Galatians 3:10 [NIV])

But it is by receiving the holy spirit, which comes through belief in Jesus Christ, that any are saved,

But we ought to give thanks to God always concerning you, brothers beloved by the Lord, that God has chosen you from the beginning unto salvation in the sanctification of the Spirit, and by faith of the truth; (2 Thessalonians 2:13 [BLB])

In which case, whoever receives the holy spirit, is then no longer under law, but under spirit,

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. (Galatians 5:18 [BSB])

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (Romans 8:9 [ESV])

For just as the holy spirit caused Saul to become another man and to prophesy,

Then the Spirit of the LORD will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. (1 Samuel 10:6 [ESV])

And also prophets and men of God prophesied when the holy spirit entered them,

And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
(Numbers 11:25 [KJV])

So did the new spirit given in the new covenant also cause men to prophesy,

And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. (Acts 19:6 [ESV])

But as opposed to the holy spirit given formerly, the new spirit now causes a man to obey the law,

And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (Ezekiel 36:27 [ESV])

Because the heart of stone, which the holy spirit removes, is the heart with evil desires that are also the cause of sin,

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26 [ESV])

Which is also the “flesh nature” Paul described as,

We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. (Romans 7:14-15 [NIV])

Which is why whoever walks by holy spirit no longer walks by flesh,

[1] In nothing then is there now condemnation to the ones in Christ Jesus, not walking according to flesh, but according to spirit. [2] For the law of the spirit of the life in Christ Jesus freed me from the law of the sin and of death. (Romans 8:1-2 [ABP])

Because this flesh nature, which is also the heart of stone, is the foreskin of the heart that the circumcision made by the spirit removes, which then frees from sin,

You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. (Romans 6:18)

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:34-36 [NIV])

And so, as opposed to doing works of the law, which no one can or has obeyed on their own, full obedience to the law is found in receiving the holy spirit through belief in Jesus Christ, hence why whoever becomes born of God by receiving the holy spirit can no longer sin,

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. (1 John 3:9-10 [KJV])

We know that every one being engendered of  God does not sin; but the one engendered of  God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. (I John 5:18 [ABP])

for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4 [NIV])

No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. (1 John 3:6 [NASB])

Because whoever becomes sanctified by receiving the holy spirit, which comes through belief in Jesus Christ, becomes perfected,

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14 [ESV])

And upholds the law by the obedience that the spirit causes,

Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law. (Romans 3:31 [NIV])

in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:4 [NIV])

And because of all this, these scriptures apply to whoever disregards the Law,

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. (Proverbs 28:9 [KJV])

Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law. (Jeremiah 6:19 [NIV])

You have trodden down all them that stray from your statutes: for their deceit is falsehood. (Psalm 119:118 [KJ2000])

You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed, those who stray from your commands. (Psalm 119:21 [NIV])

Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who have forsaken your law. (Psalm 119:53 [NIV])

Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel. Therefore the LORD’s anger burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.
 (Isaiah 5:24-25 [NIV])

Yet whoever regards and delights in the Law of God will be blessed,

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. (Psalm 119:1 [NIV])

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. (Psalm 1:1-2 [NIV])

For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God. For all His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His statutes from me. I was also blameless with Him,  And I kept myself from my iniquity. Therefore the LORD  has recompensed me according to my righteousness,  According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes. With  the kind Thou dost show Thyself kind; With the blameless Thou dost show Thyself  blameless; (Psalm 18:22-25 [NAS1977])

Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. But when grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and do not regard the majesty of the LORD. LORD, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them. LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. (Isaiah 26:8-12 [NIV])
